Cool Nights ... Crisp Whites

The white wines of Bennett Valley capture the essence of the crisp and cool summer nights.

While Syrah and the Rhône varietals are taking center stage in Bennett Valley, it is the white wines that perhaps best demonstrate the impact of a cool climate and a commitment to the “sense of place.” Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Roussanne develop pure, crisp flavors and retain their natural acidity during the long, cool season. Our white wines are often described as complex, crisp, bright and refreshing. These are white wines that reflect the natural characteristics of the varietals and pair beautifully with a wide variety of foods.

Bennett Valley Chardonnay

In describing the 2007 Bjornstad Cellars Chardonnay, Barbed Oak Vineyard , Charles Olken said…..”rich but uncommonly refined,….while a well extracted wine, it is always light on its feet and firmed by a long line of crisping acidity…built for comfortable keeping but will drink famously straight away.” 

Chardonnay grown here tends towards aromas of Meyer Lemon, crisp pear and green apple.   Crème brulée and lemon custard abound in these crisp full-bodied wines, which are focused and persistent with a long deep finish.

 

Bennett Valley Sauvignon Blanc

Robert Parker called the Grey Stack, Rosemary’s Block, Sauvignon Blanc ….” another riveting example of how good this varietal can be when handled properly.” 

Look for ripe melon, citrus, apple, white peach and apricot in the Sauvignon Blanc grown here.  Rich, smooth texture and medium body combine with zesty flavors, juicy acidity and exceptional purity.

 

 

 

Bennett Valley Viognier

 

Jeb Dunnuck of The Rhone Report describes the 2008 Jemrose Viognier Egret Pond…. “knockout aromatics of peaches, marmalade, crushed stone and flowers, medium body, a superb texture, great acidity and refreshing long finish.”

Bennett Valley Viognier shows aromas of Meyer lemon, apricot, verbena, jasmine and orange blossom.  Layered creamy texture that gives way to deep flavors of guava, peach and passison fruit.  Crisp acidity brightens the long lingering finish with a hint of minerality.

 

 

Bennett Valley Roussanne

In describing the 2008 Donelan Venus,(93% Roussane/7%Viognier), Robert Parker states that the cuvee… “ranks alongside the great white Rhone Ranger blends produced by Manfred Krankl at Sine Qua Non. It offers a light green hue to its color, explosive aromatics of tropical fruits including lychee nuts, pineapples, and orange marmalade, excellent acidity, and superb richness. This dry, full-bodied, intense elixir’s alcohol is only 12%, which is hard to believe given the flavor intensity.”

 

Much of the Roussanne grown in the valley ends up in proprietary Rhone blends.  Bennett Valley Roussanne contributes showy floral aromas, lily & freesia, wet stones, beeswax, lychee, anise peach and pear.  The palate opens rich and unctuous but is tightened up by a crisp, mouth watering finish.
